Every rare tarantula on this page was hand-picked by Will, our owner, not sorted by an algorithm. He's been a hobbyist for a long time, and Exotics Unlimited exists in the first place because he loves these animals enough to keep chasing the ones almost nobody else carries. Rare, to us, means genuinely harder to source, not automatically harder to keep and not automatically expensive, some of it is simply hard to get your hands on.
Being hands on matters here. Many of these species we work with directly in our own breeding program, and some of them we breed ourselves rather than just import and resell. That means the advice that comes with a listing is real, first-hand keeping and breeding experience, not a generic care sheet copied from somewhere else.
Most shops skip the rare stuff. It costs more to keep and the margins are thinner than easy sellers, so it's easier to just not carry it. We keep working with it anyway, because we'd be keeping these animals even if we never sold a single one. If a rare animal doesn't sell right away, we keep it, and when we end up holding a pair, we often breed it ourselves to help establish captive populations here in the United States instead of leaning on wild imports. That's part of the point of carrying rare species in the first place, not just to sell them, but to push captive breeding forward in the hobby.
