Other Common Leachianus Gecko Questions

Are New Caledonian giant geckos good pets for beginners?

Leachianus geckos are from the temperate rain forests of New Caledonia and are very easy to care for and a joy to keep!

Leachianus geckos eat mostly fruit, other geckos and larger insects in the wild. We alternate flavors and mineral supplements in the food between each feeding to ensure they are given a balanced diet!

What is the cage setup like for leachies?

For adult Leachies we recommend a cage that is 24"x18"x24". If you can provide larger, these geckos will surely appreciate and use every inch of the cage. These are aboreal geckos so fill up the space with cork bark so they have plenty to climb on. We highly recommend light cycles, live plants and full bioactive to make your pet thrive, but this is not required. Remember to anchor your elevated corks, or ledges since these geckos are very heavy!Remember that Leachianus geckos are cooler climate geckos and do well in temeratures 68°F to 75° for ambient. We recommend not including heat elements or heat bulbs. 6% UVB lighting is a great way to provide a gentle heat gradient for thermoregulation. For water we recommend daily misting and water dishes as well!

Can you handle a leachianus gecko?

Leachianus geckos tolerate handling but do best with it kept minimal. They're heavy-bodied and can be quick to jump, so handling is more about routine health checks than daily interaction. Every leachie has its own personality — some settle in and recognize their keeper, others just tolerate it, and that's normal.

Can two leachies live together?

Generally no. Leachianus geckos are territorial by nature and do best housed individually, which also makes it easy to track each animal's feeding, weight, and health. Pairing is something breeders manage deliberately and temporarily, not a standing setup.

What do leachianus geckos eat?

In the wild, leachianus geckos eat mostly fruit, nectar, and insects, occasionally taking smaller geckos. We feed a complete gecko diet powder (CGD) mixed with water, alternating flavors and supplementing with calcium, minerals, and bee pollen at each feeding.
