Building the Ideal Setup for an Arboreal Tarantula
Arboreal tarantula species need height, ventilation, and structure. Here are some quick tips to remember:
- Go tall, not wide. Set up a vertical enclosure with at least 2–3 times your spider's leg span in usable height and width.
- Ventilate front and top. Ensure your setup features either top or side ventilation to prevent humidity from escaping too quickly. If your enclosure has both, be prepared to mist and add water to the substrate more frequently to maintain moisture.
- Give them something to web against. Provide real wood like cork bark or sanitized branches to web against. These natural anchor points replicate their environment perfectly, prompting arboreals to settle in and start building their funnel webs almost immediately.
- Install a retreat. Place a cork tube or flat diagonally near the top of the enclosure to give both tube-dwelling and open-surface species a natural place to rest and settle in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are arboreal tarantula species good for beginners?
Arboreal tarantulas are best suited to intermediate keepers who have already successfully kept a terrestrial species. They are faster, more defensive, and less forgiving of husbandry mistakes than ground-dwelling species. New World arboreals like Caribena versicolor and Avicularia aurantiacaare the most approachable entry point, but if this is your very first tarantula, start on the ground.
How often do arboreal tarantulas need to be fed?
Juveniles should be fed every 5–7 days to support growth. Adults do well on one appropriately sized prey item every 10–14 days. Refusal to eat before a molt or during cooler months is normal and not a cause for concern. They also need to have a water dish (preferably elevated) at all times since they are so active. Explore detailed care sheets for more information.
How long do arboreal tarantulas live?
Females live significantly longer than males, with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years in captivity under optimal care. Males typically live 2-4 years before reaching their final molt into sexual maturity.
