Grammostola pulchra, commonly known as the Brazilian Black Tarantula, is one of the most iconic species in the hobby, especially for beginners. Adults of this species feature a stunning jet black color across the carapace (head), abdomen, and legs, making them one of the few docile jet black tarantula species. This species is also referred to as the "Black Lab" of tarantulas due to its extremely docile nature and slower moving demeanor. Spiderlings start with a reddish coloration and a black abdomen that turns fully jet black at around 2.5 inches. We have also observed these constantly rearranging their enclosure, carrying heavy objects and water dishes with their fangs to fit their liking, a behavior seen in other species in the genus as well. How should Grammostola pulchra be kept?

• Adult Size: Reaches around 5 to 6 inches at full leg span, with a heavy bodied build and slow, deliberate movement.
• Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial setup with about 3 times the leg span as floor space and 2 times the leg span as height, with substrate depth around the leg span to allow light burrowing and secure retreat use. For a half-inch sling, that means starting small, around 1.5 by 1.5 by 1 inch, sizing up as it grows.
• Temperature: Maintain between 65 to 75 degrees F with stable conditions.
• Humidity: Keep moderate humidity with slightly moist substrate, allowing the top layer to dry out between mistings. Good ventilation is critical. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can also be effective as long as the enclosure is not over-misted.
• Water: A shallow textured water dish works well, something they can grip when climbing out.
• Diet: Feed crickets, roaches, or similar prey sized appropriately to the carapace (head); this species feeds steadily but may show slower feeding responses at times.

Classification Note

There is ongoing discussion within the hobby regarding the distinction between Grammostola pulchra and Grammostola quirogai, as both have appeared in the trade under similar names. While they are recognized as separate species, much of what has historically been sold in the hobby has been labeled as G. pulchra. There is a good chance that, based on descriptions of both species, what we call Grammostola pulchra is actually Grammostola quirogai. These were sold to us as pulchra, so we will continue to use this name until a paper distinguishes hobby pulchra from wild forms of pulchra and quirogai. Since we cannot make species determinations based on color alone, changing the name without that evidence would be irresponsible. That is why we are keeping this listing as Grammostola pulchra "Hobby" form.

Are Grammostola pulchra friendly?

Very. The Grammostola pulchra, often referred to as the black lab of tarantulas, are among the most docile species you can own. Calm, slow-moving, and tolerant of handling.

Are Grammostola pulchra aggressive?

No. The Brazilian Black is one of the most easygoing tarantulas in the hobby. Biting is extremely rare given the species' calm nature. Hair-flicking happens occasionally. 

Are Grammostola pulchra venomous?

Yes, but nothing to lose sleep over. The Brazilian Black's venom is low-potency and bites are rare given the species' temperament. Localized pain and swelling is the typical worst-case outcomes for a healthy adult. 

Are Grammostola pulchra good for beginners?

One of the best options available. The Brazilian Black is docile, hardy, and forgiving of minor husbandry mistakes. 

How long do G. pulchripes live?

Females can reach 25-30 years. Males are significantly shorter-lived, typically 4-5 years. One of the longest-lived tarantula species kept in captivity.

How can you tell if a G. pulchra is female?

The most reliable method is sexing a molt. Females have a visible spermatheca—a small flap on the inside of the abdomen near the epigastric furrow. Adult males also develop tibial hooks on their front legs and enlarged, bulbous pedipalps at maturity.
