Description

Spinosatibiapalpus sp. 'Gitan' (Dwarf Bronze Tarantula)

The Dwarf Bronze Tarantula, or Spinosatibiapalpus sp. 'Gitan' (ex Pseudhapalopus sp. 'Gitan'), is a terrestrial species from Trinidad and Tobago. Adults carry a metallic bronze base with orange-blonde highlights across the legs and carapace, set off by a reddish abdomen. Spiderlings start out plain, with the bronze coloration coming in around 2 inches, while the species tops out around 3 inches as an adult. Females live 10 to 15 years and males live 3 to 4 years. It is hardy and forgiving, and while a little skittish, it is not an aggressive species. Grab this forgiving New World tarantula today, offered here as a spiderling.

Why do hobbyists keep the Dwarf Bronze Tarantula?

  • Metallic Bronze Coloration: A metallic bronze base with orange-blonde highlights across the legs and carapace, set off by a reddish abdomen.
  • Color Change: Spiderlings start out plain, so you get to watch the bronze coloration come in and intensify with every molt.
  • Dwarf Species: Tops out at around 3 inches, staying small and manageable for life.
  • Heavy Webber: Lays down plenty of web around its burrow, giving the enclosure a lived-in look.
  • Rare in the Hobby: Still hard to find in the trade, and we do not see this one often.

How should Spinosatibiapalpus sp. 'Gitan' be kept?

  • Adult Size: Hatches at around 0.25 inch and reaches an adult max of about 3 inches, so expect a couple of rehouses along the way.
  • Enclosure: A footprint of about 3 by 3 inches with around 2 inches of height and roughly 1.5 inches of substrate works well, with a cork bark hide it can tuck under completely.
  • Rehousing: Size up to about 6 by 6 by 4 inches, then about 10 by 10 by 6 inches as it grows, each stage lasting a year and a half to two years at this species' slow to medium-slow growth rate.
  • Temperature: Keep between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler is survivable but raises the odds of trouble molting.
  • Humidity: Keep the substrate slightly damp and top it up before it dries out, since this tropical species likes things wetter than most terrestrials.
  • Water: A shallow textured water dish it can grip when climbing out.
  • Diet: Offer prey around 1/16 inch, roughly a quarter of its current leg span, at least once a week.
  • Temperament: Heavy webbing and a little skittish, quicker to retreat than stand its ground, but not aggressive.

Are there any additional notes or considerations for Spinosatibiapalpus sp. 'Gitan'?

  • Captive Bred: All tarantulas at Exotics Unlimited are captive bred.
  • Recently Reclassified: Formerly placed under Pseudhapalopus, moved into its own group, Spinosatibiapalpus, by a 2020 revision, so you may still see it listed under the older name.
