Why do hobbyists keep the Blue & Pink Bird-eater?

  • Colorful Mature Males: Males finish in bright purple, pink and red, one of the more dramatic male color changes you will see on a terrestrial.
  • Fast Grower: Sericopelma grow faster than a lot of new world terrestrials, so you reach real size sooner.
  • Great Feeding Response: A strong, confident eater that makes feeding day fun to watch.
  • Uncommon in the Hobby: A Panamanian locality you do not see on many stock lists.

How should Sericopelma sp. 'Boquete' be kept?

  • Adult Size: Grows to about 8 inches in diagonal leg span, so plan for a large terrestrial enclosure as an adult.
  • Enclosure: A terrestrial setup with more floor space than height, a few inches of substrate and a hide it can fully back into.
  • Humidity: Keep the substrate lightly moist rather than wet, with good cross ventilation.
  • Water: A water dish is strongly recommended. These species are moisture-dependent, especially during molting.
  • Diet: Crickets or roaches about the size of the carapace (head), offered at least once a week.
  • Temperament: Fast and alert. Give it a hide, use long tongs at feeding and maintenance, and it settles into a confident display animal.
