Description
Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro' Tarantula
Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro,' meaning "black tone" or "black shade," is a New World arboreal tarantula native to Ecuador, and one of the newest Psalmopoeus to enter the US hobby, first arriving in early 2025. Adults have a jet black body and legs with bluish femurs, colorful throughout its life. Even from spiderlings the species is colorful, building into that full jet black and bluish adult look as it grows. This species only grows to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span, with a fast growth rate, one of the fastest growing genera in the hobby. Females live about 10 years while males typically live only 2 to 3. This is a fast, alert species that keeps you on your toes rather than a calm handler's pet, and we recommend it for keepers who already have some arboreal experience. How should Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro' be kept?
- Adult Size: This spiderling is around 0.5 to 0.75 inch now, and the species grows toward an adult max of around 5 to 6 inches in leg span, so plan on more than one enclosure upsize ahead.
- Enclosure: A 4 by 4 by 6 inch enclosure with 0.5 to 1 inch of substrate and a cork bark or tube piece for climbing and webbing is the right starting footprint, sized a notch ahead of the animal so it has room to grow into before the next rehouse.
- Setup Tips: Real cork bark or a cork tube piece makes a real difference for this species, especially at spiderling size, giving it a natural climbing surface and webbing anchor that helps it settle in faster.
- Rehousing: From here, expect a cage 2 around 8 by 8 by 12 inches and a final cage 3 around 12 by 12 by 18 inches, each lasting roughly 6 to 8 months, about 1 to 2 years total to reach adult size.
- Temperature: 75-80F.
- Humidity: moderate 65-75%, good cross ventilation.
- Water: small dish, kept filled.
- Diet: Feed prey roughly 1/8 to 3/16 inch, about the size of this spiderling's carapace (head), at least once a week.
- Temperament: This is a fast, alert spiderling that reacts quickly to anything nearby, which keepers with some arboreal experience tend to find part of the appeal, there is always something to watch.
