Description
Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro' Tarantula
Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro,' meaning "black tone" or "black shade," is a New World arboreal tarantula native to Ecuador, and one of the newest Psalmopoeus to enter the US hobby, first arriving in early 2025. Adults have a jet black body and legs with bluish femurs, colorful throughout its life. Even from spiderlings the species is colorful, building into that full jet black and bluish adult look as it grows. This species only grows to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span, with a fast growth rate, one of the fastest growing genera in the hobby. Females live about 10 years while males typically live only 2 to 3. This is a fast, alert species that keeps you on your toes rather than a calm handler's pet, and we recommend it for keepers who already have some arboreal experience. How should Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro' be kept?
- Adult Size: Spiderlings start around 0.5 to 0.75 inch, and this species grows quickly toward an adult max of around 5 to 6 inches in leg span, so plan on upsizing the enclosure more than once along the way.
- Enclosure: Each size we carry needs its own enclosure footprint. Scroll down to the size that matches what you are looking for and that page will walk you through the exact dimensions for that animal.
- Setup Tips: Real cork bark or a cork tube piece makes a real difference for this species at every size, giving it a natural climbing and webbing anchor that helps it settle in faster.
- Rehousing: This fast growing species moves through three enclosure sizes on the way to adulthood, with each one lasting roughly 6 to 8 months before the next rehouse, about 1 to 2 years total.
- Temperature: 75-80F.
- Humidity: moderate 65-75%, good cross ventilation.
- Water: small dish, kept filled.
- Diet: Prey size is matched to each size we carry and detailed on that size's own page, but feed at least once a week no matter which size you choose.
- Temperament: This is a fast, alert species that reacts quickly to anything happening nearby, which keepers with some arboreal experience tend to find part of the appeal.
Are there any additional notes or considerations for Psalmopoeus sp. 'Tononegro'?
- Not the Same as Psalmopoeus sp. 'Black': This is a distinct species from the Psalmopoeus sp. 'Black' sold by other sellers, a different animal entirely rather than another name for the same one, so collectors looking to add both to a collection can do so without any overlap.
