Description
Psalmopoeus reduncus (Costa Rican Orange Mouth Tarantula)
The Costa Rican Orange Mouth, or Psalmopoeus reduncus, is a New World arboreal tarantula from Costa Rica. Adults have a copper metallic coloration across the body, colorful throughout its life. Even from spiderlings the species is colorful, building into that full copper metallic adult look as it grows. This species only grows to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span, with a fast growth rate, one of the fastest growing genera in the hobby. Females live about 10 years while males typically live only 2 to 3. This is a fast, alert species that keeps you on your toes rather than a calm handler's pet, and we recommend it for keepers who already have some arboreal experience. Why do hobbyists keep the Costa Rican Orange Mouth?
- Copper Metallic Coloration + Colorful Spiderlings: A warm, shimmering copper look that carries through from sling to adult.
- Great Feeding Response: Fast, eager, and fun to watch take down prey.
- Heavy Webber: Known even within this heavy-webbing genus for expressing it outside the tree tube itself.
- Fast Growth Rate: One of the fastest growing genera in the hobby.
How should Psalmopoeus reduncus be kept?
- Adult Size: This species hatches out around 0.5 to 0.75 inch and reaches an adult max of about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span, so every enclosure we recommend is sized for where it's headed, not just where it is today.
- Enclosure: At this size, a cage around 8x8x12 inches is right, with 1 to 2 inches of substrate, a taller piece of cork bark or wood for climbing and a tube retreat, and room for a proper web structure. Sizing a notch ahead keeps it growing into the space rather than outgrowing it right away.
- Setup Tips: Real cork bark or a piece of wood makes a real difference for this species. It gives it a natural surface to build its silk tube retreat against.
- Rehousing: The next and final move up is to a cage around 12x12x18 inches as this species finishes growing into adult size, and at this fast growth rate that move is usually within about 6 to 8 months.
- Temperature: 75 to 80°F, the optimal range for this tropical arboreal species. Cooler temperatures are survivable, but increase the odds of trouble molting and growing, so we recommend staying in this range. Most keepers do not need any extra heating to hit it.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity, 65 to 75%, is right for this species. Good ventilation matters just as much as the number. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can work too, as long as the enclosure isn't over misted.
- Water: Provide a shallow water dish, placed in an elevated position if possible. A weekly misting is a good idea too, so it can drink off the enclosure's surfaces or its own webbing if it prefers that to the dish, as long as you're wetting surfaces rather than soaking the substrate.
- Diet: Offer 3/8 to 1/2 inch crickets or roaches, roughly the size of this juvenile's carapace (head), at least once a week. This is a fast, confident feeder that rarely turns down a meal.
- Temperament: Fast, alert and quick to defend itself if it feels threatened, which makes for a confident, responsive display animal once it's settled in. Best suited to a keeper who already has some experience with faster arboreals.
Are there any additional notes or considerations for Psalmopoeus reduncus?
- Native Range: This species is native to the rainforests of Costa Rica, part of the lower trunk tube dwelling branch of the Psalmopoeus genus.
- Not the Panama Blonde: You may see this species' keyword grouping overlap with its cousin Psalmopoeus pulcher. The true Panama Blonde is P. pulcher. This is the Costa Rican Orange Mouth, named for the orange on its chelicerae.
- Tube Retreats: Like others in its genus, this species builds a silk tube retreat low in the enclosure rather than a simple open web.
