Description

Psalmopoeus irminia (Venezuelan Suntiger Tarantula)

The Venezuelan Suntiger, or Psalmopoeus irminia, is a New World arboreal tarantula from Venezuela. Adults have a black coloration with stunning reflective orange highlights across the legs and body, colorful throughout its life. Even from spiderlings the species is colorful, carrying that bold black and reflective orange contrast from hatch and building into the full adult look as it grows. This species only grows to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span, with a fast growth rate, one of the fastest growing genera in the hobby. Females live about 10 years while males typically live only 2 to 3. This is a fast, alert species that keeps you on your toes rather than a calm handler's pet, and we recommend it for keepers who already have some arboreal experience. Grab this new world tarantula for sale today, offered here as a juvenile.

Why do hobbyists keep the Venezuelan Suntiger?

  • Black & Reflective Orange Coloration + Colorful Spiderlings: A striking high contrast look that holds up from the spiderling stage through adulthood.
  • Great Feeding Response: Fast, eager, and fun to watch take down prey.
  • Heavy Webber: Builds dense, visible web retreats that become part of the display.
  • Fast Growth Rate: One of the fastest growing genera in the hobby.

How should Psalmopoeus irminia be kept?

  • Adult Size: This juvenile is around 1 to 1.25 inch now and will grow to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span as an adult.
  • Enclosure: A 4 by 4 by 6 inch enclosure works well here, with 0.5 to 1 inch of substrate, cork bark for climbing, and webbing anchor points. It is sized a notch ahead of the animal so it has room to grow.
  • Setup Tips: Real cork bark or wood pieces make a significant difference at this size, helping it settle in faster and giving it a natural surface to build its tube on.
  • Rehousing: Expect to move up to an 8 by 8 by 12 inch enclosure, then a 12 by 12 by 18 inch enclosure, each lasting roughly 6 to 8 months at this fast growth rate.
  • Temperature: 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity, 65 to 75 percent, matters less than good cross ventilation at this size.
  • Water: A shallow water dish placed in an elevated position, refreshed weekly with a light misting.
  • Diet: A 5/16" cricket works well at this size, offered at least once a week.
  • Temperament: Fast and alert at every stage, which keeps a keeper engaged while this species grows.

Are there any additional notes or considerations for Psalmopoeus irminia?

  • Native Range: This species comes from Venezuela, where it lives in tropical rainforest, building silk tube retreats along vertical surfaces.
  • Where The Name Comes From: The reflective orange legs flashing against the black base are exactly what earned this species its Suntiger name.
  • Captive Bred: All tarantulas at Exotics Unlimited are captive bred.
