Description
Magnacrus tongmianensis (Chinese Stout Leg Earth Tiger)
The Chinese Stout Leg Earth Tiger, or Magnacrus tongmianensis (ex Citharognathus tongmianensis), is a terrestrial to fossorial tarantula from southern China. It is named for its unusually thick back legs, one of the strangest body shapes you will see on a tarantula. It spends a lot of its time in a burrow but is calm and docile for an old world earth tiger, and it is a rare species to find in the hobby. Grab this old world tarantula for sale today, offered here as a spiderling.
Why do hobbyists keep the Chinese Stout Leg Earth Tiger?
- Thick Hind Legs: The oversized back legs give it a body shape unlike almost any other tarantula.
- Docile Temperament: Calm for an old world burrower.
- Burrow Builder: Digs and maintains a burrow, which is fun to watch in a deep substrate setup.
- Rare in the Hobby: Very few are offered in the US.
How should Magnacrus tongmianensis be kept?
- Enclosure: At 0.5 to 0.75 inch, a small enclosure with deep substrate, at least 2 to 3 inches, so it can dig a burrow, plus a starter hole or small hide.
- Humidity: Keep the substrate lightly moist, especially down low where the burrow sits, and never let it dry out completely.
- Water: Provide a water dish near the burrow entrance. Fossorial species benefit from ambient moisture and will use a dish placed at substrate level.
- Diet: A 1/8 to 3/16 inch cricket, about the size of the carapace (head), offered at least once a week near the burrow entrance.
- Temperament: Docile, and more likely to retreat into its burrow than hold its ground. Use tongs for feeding and maintenance.
Are there any additional notes or considerations for Magnacrus tongmianensis?
- New Genus: This species was recently moved from Citharognathus to Magnacrus, so you will see it sold under both names.
- Captive Bred: All tarantulas at Exotics Unlimited are captive bred.
