Idiothele mira (Bluefoot Trapdoor Baboon Tarantula)

This species is one of the few tarantulas that makes true trapdoors complete with a hinge, and combined with this unique adaptation, it also stays smaller than most baboon species. Metallic sky blue feet stand out sharply against an otherwise dull grey-brown body with typical baboon markings across the carapace (head) and abdomen. Grab this genuinely unique old world tarantula for sale if you want a species defined by its behavior as much as its looks.

Why do hobbyists keep Idiothele mira?

  • Stunning Coloration: Metallic sky blue feet contrast sharply against a dull grey-brown body, a striking, understated combination.
  • Rare in the Hobby: One of the very few tarantula species known to build a true hinged trapdoor, a genuinely unique behavior in the hobby.
  • Heavy Webber: Constructs elaborate silk-lined burrows, often with multiple chambers.

How should Idiothele mira be kept?

  • Adult Size: Reaches about 3 inches at full leg span, notably smaller than many other baboon species.
  • Enclosure: This is a fossorial species, so provide substrate depth at least twice the leg span to support its impressive burrowing and trapdoor construction.
  • Temperature: Keep between 65 to 75 degrees F.
  • Humidity: Keep the substrate damp but not saturated, resembling the texture and color of coffee grounds. Organic coconut fiber works well since it resists mold and holds humidity steadily.
  • Water: A shallow textured water dish works well, something they can grip when climbing out.
  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, or mealworms sized to about a quarter of the leg span, matching the width of the carapace (head). Feed at least once a week.
  • Temperament: Defensive, it carries a medically significant bite typical of old world species, so this is a display only animal. We do not encourage or recommend handling with any of our tarantulas, old world species especially.

Are there any additional notes or considerations?

  • True Trapdoor Behavior: Building and maintaining a hinged trapdoor is a rare trait in the tarantula world, making this species especially rewarding to watch develop its burrow.
  • Captive Bred: All Tarantulas are 100% captive bred.
