Description

Davus sp. 'Veracruz'

Davus sp. 'Veracruz' is a New World tarantula from Veracruz, Mexico, a terrestrial dwarf species. Adults have black legs, a copper orange carapace, and a high contrast black and orange tiger stripe pattern on the abdomen. Spiderlings already show color as babies, appearing orange and black. As with the rest of the Davus genus, females live around 10 years while males mature faster and typically live only 2 to 3. Like other Tropical Terrestrial Dwarfs, this species is a heavy webber that can be a little skittish, quicker to retreat into its web than stand its ground, though it is not an aggressive tarantula by nature. Grab this uncommon Mexican tarantula for sale today, available here as a juvenile male.

Why do hobbyists keep Davus sp. 'Veracruz'?

  • Bold Tiger Striping: Black legs, a copper orange carapace, and a high contrast black and orange tiger stripe pattern on the abdomen give this species a look all its own.
  • Colorful Spiderlings: Spiderlings already show color from a young age, appearing orange and black, the same as the rest of the Davus genus.
  • Heavy Webber: Like the rest of the genus, this species builds substantial webbing, giving the enclosure an active, lived-in look.
  • Dwarf Species: A dwarf terrestrial species. Dwarf tarantulas for sale like this one are in demand for their small size and for not needing much space in a collection.
  • Uncommon In The Hobby: Davus sp. 'Veracruz' doesn't come up often in the trade, so keepers who want one shouldn't wait around.

How should Davus sp. 'Veracruz' be kept?

  • Adult Size: This species reaches about 4 inches in leg span at full size. Hatchlings start out around 0.5 to 0.75 inch.
  • Enclosure: We recommend an enclosure of about 8 by 8 by 6 inches at this size, with about 2.5 inches of substrate. We size our cage recommendations a step ahead of the animal so there's room to grow before the next move, which cuts down on how often you have to rehouse.
  • Rehousing: From here, expect one more move up to a final enclosure of about 12 by 12 by 8 inches, roughly 10 to 14 months from now at this species' medium to fast growth rate. Males often mature before ever needing this last move.
  • Temperature: Keep this species between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a tropical species, and keeping it at a cooler temperature raises the odds of a bad molt or a lack of appetite. We always recommend keeping all animals in their natural temperature ranges and conditions.
  • Humidity: Never let the substrate dry out completely. This is a tropical species, and it is not very forgiving if things get too dry, so keep the substrate lightly moist at all times. Good ventilation is critical. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can also be effective as long as the enclosure is not over-misted.
  • Water: A shallow textured water dish works well, something they can grip when climbing out.
  • Diet: Offer prey around 1/2 inch in size, roughly a quarter of this tarantula's current leg span, at least once a week.
  • Temperament: This species is a heavy webber that can be a little skittish, quicker to retreat into its web than stand its ground, though it is not an aggressive tarantula by nature. Males also mature faster and typically live only 2 to 3 years, versus roughly 10 for females.

Are there any additional notes or considerations for Davus sp. 'Veracruz'?
