Description
Davus sp. 'Oaxaca' (Oaxaca White Tiger Tarantula)
The Oaxaca White Tiger Tarantula, or Davus sp. 'Oaxaca', is a New World tarantula from Oaxaca, Mexico, a terrestrial dwarf species. Adults have black legs with white striping down them, a copper orange carapace, and black and orange coloration on the abdomen. This species is sexually dimorphic: mature males develop solid white legs, while females keep the white striping down their legs into adulthood. This color comes in around 2 inches in diagonal leg span. As with the rest of the Davus genus, females live around 10 years while males mature faster and typically live only 2 to 3. Like other Tropical Terrestrial Dwarfs, this species is a heavy webber that can be a little skittish, quicker to retreat into its web than stand its ground, though it is not an aggressive tarantula by nature. Why do hobbyists keep Davus sp. 'Oaxaca'?
- Striking White Coloration: While others in the genus run in hues of red and orange, this is the only species with distinct white coloration on the legs, along with a unique orange and black pattern on the abdomen.
- Colorful Spiderlings: Spiderlings already show color from a young age, the same as the rest of the Davus genus.
- Heavy Webber: Like the rest of the genus, this species builds substantial webbing, giving the enclosure an active, lived-in look.
- Dwarf Species: A dwarf terrestrial species. Dwarf tarantulas for sale like this one are in demand for their small size and for not needing much space in a collection.
- Rare In The Hobby: Davus sp. 'Oaxaca' is uncommon in the trade, so keepers who want one of these color-split tarantulas shouldn't wait around.
How should Oaxaca White Tiger Tarantula be kept?
- Adult Size: This species reaches about 3.5 inches in leg span at full size. Hatchlings start out around 0.5 to 0.75 inch.
- Enclosure: Enclosure size depends on which stage you choose. See each size's own page for exact dimensions.
- Temperature: Keep this species between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a tropical species, and keeping it at a cooler temperature raises the odds of a bad molt or a lack of appetite. We always recommend keeping all animals in their natural temperature ranges and conditions.
- Humidity: Never let the substrate dry out completely. This is a tropical species, and it is not very forgiving if things get too dry, so keep the substrate lightly moist at all times. Good ventilation is critical. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can also be effective as long as the enclosure is not over-misted.
- Water: A shallow textured water dish works well, something they can grip when climbing out.
- Diet: We recommend prey size relative to leg span, roughly a quarter of the animal's current size, depending on the size you choose.
- Temperament: This species is a heavy webber that can be a little skittish, quicker to retreat into its web than stand its ground, though it is not an aggressive tarantula by nature.
