Description

Davus sp. 'Colombia' (Magma-Rump Tarantula)

The Magma-Rump Tarantula, or Davus sp. 'Colombia', is a New World tarantula from Colombia, a terrestrial dwarf species. Adults carry a unique coloration and pattern with black legs, a copper orange carapace marked with a black triangle on the front, and a black abdomen with two orange stripes running down the sides and a row of orange dots down the middle, a look that resembles flowing magma and is exactly where the Magma-Rump name comes from. No other species in the Davus genus carries this orange striping or color combination. As with the rest of the Davus genus, females live around 10 years while males mature faster and typically live only 2 to 3. Like other Tropical Terrestrial Dwarfs, this species is a heavy webber that can be a little skittish, quicker to retreat into its web than stand its ground, though it is not an aggressive tarantula by nature. Grab this striking Magma-Rump tarantula for sale today, available here as a juvenile female.

Why do hobbyists keep Davus sp. 'Colombia'?

  • Bold Magma Patterning: Black legs, a copper orange carapace with a black triangle, and a black abdomen striped and dotted in orange, a look no other Davus species shares and exactly where the Magma-Rump name comes from.
  • Colorful Spiderlings: Spiderlings already show color, just in a different pattern than the adult stripes, which can look similar to some other species until the Magma-Rump striping develops with age.
  • Heavy Webber: Like the rest of the genus, this species builds substantial webbing, giving the enclosure an active, lived-in look.
  • Dwarf Species: A dwarf terrestrial species. Dwarf tarantulas for sale like this one are in demand for their small size and for not needing much space in a collection.
  • Rare In The Hobby: Davus sp. 'Colombia' is uncommon in the trade, so keepers who want one shouldn't wait around.

How should Magma-Rump Tarantula be kept?

  • Adult Size: This species reaches about 4 to 4.5 inches in leg span at full size. Hatchlings start out around 0.5 to 0.75 inch.
  • Enclosure: We recommend an enclosure of about 10 by 10 by 6 inches at this size, with about 3 inches of substrate. We size our cage recommendations a step ahead of the animal so there's room to grow before the next move, which cuts down on how often you have to rehouse.
  • Rehousing: From here, expect one more move up to a final enclosure of about 14 by 14 by 10 inches, roughly 10 to 14 months from now at this species' medium to fast growth rate.
  • Temperature: Keep this species between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a tropical species, and keeping it at a cooler temperature raises the odds of a bad molt or a lack of appetite. We always recommend keeping all animals in their natural temperature ranges and conditions.
  • Humidity: Never let the substrate dry out completely. This is a tropical species, and it is not very forgiving if things get too dry, so keep the substrate lightly moist at all times. Good ventilation is critical. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can also be effective as long as the enclosure is not over-misted.
  • Water: A shallow textured water dish works well, something they can grip when climbing out.
  • Diet: Offer prey around 1/2 inch in size, roughly a quarter of this tarantula's current leg span, at least once a week.
  • Temperament: This species is a heavy webber that can be a little skittish, quicker to retreat into its web than stand its ground, though it is not an aggressive tarantula by nature.

Are there any additional notes or considerations for Magma-Rump Tarantula?

  • Captive Bred: All tarantulas at Exotics Unlimited are captive bred.
  • Larger Than Most Davus: This species hatches out bigger than most of its genus mates, and reaches one of the larger adult sizes in the genus too, at 4 to 4.5 inches in leg span.

Listing Notes
