Avicularia avicularia (Guyana Pink Toe Tarantula)

Avicularia avicularia is one of the original hobby staples. Native to a huge range across northern South America and Trinidad, this medium-sized New World arboreal builds thick silky tube retreats up high and is one of the more forgiving arboreal species to keep. Not flashy by today's standards, but there is a reason it has been in the hobby for decades. Grab this New World arboreal tarantula for sale today if you want the classic pink toe that started it all.

Why do hobbyists keep Avicularia avicularia?

  • Classic Pink Toe Look: The dark velvety body with bright pink toe pads on every leg is the look that defined pink toe tarantula for a generation of keepers. Still one of the most recognizable tarantulas out there.
  • Arboreal Heavy Webber: Builds a thick silky tube retreat at the top of the enclosure and will fill any anchor points you give it.
  • Great Display Species: Once it claims a spot and builds its retreat, it usually stays visible near the entrance. Not a species that hides away.
  • Docile Temperament: Docile by arboreal standards. Still fast and can jump when startled, but far less defensive than most Old World arboreals.
  • Hobby Favorite: One of the most recommended beginner arboreals in the hobby. A staple at every expo for good reason.

How should Avicularia avicularia be kept?

  • Enclosure: Arboreal setup with roughly 2 times the leg span as the footprint and 3 times the leg span as the height. Vertical cork bark, foliage, and multiple anchor points for webbing. Good ventilation is critical. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can also be effective as long as the enclosure is not over-misted.
  • Temperature: 75 to 85 degrees F ideal. Normal room temperatures work fine. Avoid prolonged temps below 65 degrees F.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high. Slightly moist substrate at the base with good airflow. Stale humid conditions cause problems faster than slightly drier air.
  • Water: Provide a shallow water dish placed in an elevated position if possible. More natural for arboreal species and helps prevent crickets from falling in and drowning.
  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, or similar prey no larger than the carapace (head). Prey placed on or near the webbing gets a better feeding response.
  • Temperament: Docile and manageable. Fast when startled but rarely defensive. One of the safest arboreals for keepers moving up from terrestrials.

Are there any additional notes or considerations?

  • Sling Care: Keep slings in small, well-ventilated setups with a cork tube or fake plant. The most common mistake is sealing them too tight chasing humidity. They need air. We rear our slings in larger enclosures with natural cork bark and foliage from day one. Combined with weekly feeding, this produces stronger, more resilient animals.
  • Captive Bred: All our animals are 100% captive bred.

Listing Notes

  • This listing includes multiple size options. Animals are unsexed, there is approximately a 50/50 chance of male or female on most species.
